1) What period does the Middle Ages cover?
The Middle Ages cover one thousand years, from 476 to 1492
2) What general characteristics does it have (according to the teacher’s comments)?
People sang in the street and in churches. In churches and cathedrals they sang Gregorian Chants. Social classes were divided in privileged (kings, nobility and clergy) and not privileged.
3) What is the main difference between “troubadours” and “minstrels”?
A minstrel was travelling artist, they offered his street show in exchange for money or food, sometimes they participate as entertainment at banquets.
Troubadours were musicians and poets who composed their works.
4) Pay attention to these two monuments (a Romanic church and a Gothic cathedral). What do their different heights have in common with the music evolution of those centuries?
In the Romanic churches the pitch was high and in the Gothic cathedrals was low.
5) What do you feel looking at these pictures (taken from the 19th century but directly linked to the Middle Ages)? In your own opinion, what kind of music could accompany these images?
I feel the effort and sacrifice rewarded of the soldier with the first one and I accompanied with victory music, the second one I feel relax and I accompanied with a relaxing music and the third one I feel romanticism and I accompanied a harp music.
6) Why does Heavy Metal music love this aesthetic?
Because they are very gothic.
